It’s easy to fall in love with lots of different interior design trends, but if you’re not sure how to bring it all together, then you might need to narrow it down.
Maybe you’re starting out fresh and building a new house, or you think it’s time for a cull and a few new pieces in your home.
Research the internet (and Pinterest) can help you research a style you might like. Save photos of rooms which catch your eye and of those you think you could live with. Gather a list of paint colors and even fabric swatches. Once you bring images and a few samples of things you like together you should start to see a pattern forming.
Gather items you cherish. Check the top of your dresser, your mantel, your bookshelves, then pull special clothes from your closet and see what styles, theme, colors etc…
Name it! even though you might feel like you’ve mashed a couple of styles together (once you look over your saved images/mood board) you might see a couple of interior design “buzz” themes pop out at you. Eg. Scandi, Industrial, Minimalism, Mid Century Modern, Classic, Contemporary, French Country, Boho… Then you can start searching for inspiration using just these couple of words.
Can you live with it? You might be in between a couple of styles, but that’s ok! I am always in between styles. I like to combine a few together. I buy what I like and what I can afford. I also buy what suits my home. Do you have kids and 2 inside dogs? You have to think about the practicality and use of the items in your home. There is no use buying lots of glass items or shiny things if there will be upkeep because the pets play and toys or food treats get everywhere.
Purchase an “anchor” design piece.
Find one object such as a centerpiece bowl, lamp, frame, even a small piece of furniture that you just love. Use it as your design anchor, and style the rest of the room off of that one piece. That way, you have something you truly enjoy to reference back to as you explore other ideas for your home.
Look for common threads―design, colors, shapes, materials, vibe―among the things you treasure. See which of the styles pictured here your picks most jibe with. You may find yourself attracted to a blend of styles rather than just one; as you delve into the following rooms, note which features appeal to you. This will help you translate your taste into smart decorating choices.
Try a design style quiz.
Online style quizzes can help you navigate your style and figure out why you like certain Pinterest pins. Since online e-design has come into its own, there are loads of design style quizzes to choose from.
Here is one to try
Visit a designer showhouse.
Many interior designers participate in showhouses, and often, the proceeds go to charity. Designers get the opportunity to decorate a room that best reflects what styles and trends they are currently embracing. A visit to one can help you tap into what you’d like to see in your own home.
