Neat Recipes To Try is what I was thinking the first time I saw these recipes.  After making them it was the right first impression.

Raspberry Buns
  • › 12oz or 340g self‑raising flour
  • › 4oz or 110g sugar
  • › 2oz or 50g margarine
  • › 2 eggs
  • › pinch of salt
  • › 4 dessertspoons semi‑skimmed milk
  • › raspberries fresh or from tin
  • › 2 dessertspoons water
  • › 1 teaspoon caster sugar for dusting
  1. Pre‑heat the oven to 230°C or 450°F or Gas Mark 8.
  2. Sift the flour, salt and baking powder into a bowl.
  3. Rub in the margarine. Add the sugar and mix well.
  4. Beat the eggs with the milk until light and lemon‑colored.

  5. Stir this into the flour mixture, mixing with a knife to get a smooth dough.

  6. (If dough seems slightly dry add cold water carefully a little at a time).
  7. Roll dough on a lightly floured board into a thick
  8. roll, and divide in 12 equal portions.
  9. Flour hands lightly and roll each portion into a ball. 

  10. Place 2 inches apart on a greased baking sheet. 

  11. Make a hole in the top of each bun and push in some raspberries.

  12. Wet the edges of each hole and pinch together.
  13. Brush with milk or egg and dust each bun over with caster sugar.
  14. Bake in the pre‑heated oven for 15–20 minutes


Tea Scones
  • › 1lb or 450g self‑raising flour
  • › 2oz or 50g sugar
  • › 4oz or 110g margarine
  • › 1 egg
  • › water or semi‑skimmed milk
  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C or 375°F or Gas Mark 6.

  2. Put flour and sugar into a mixing bowl. Rub in the margarine.
  3. Add the beaten eggs with sufficient water or milk to make a nice
  4. soft dough.
  5. Put on a floured surface and roll to ½ inch thickness.

  6. Cut with a knife or pastry cutter, brush over with egg wash

  7. or a little milk and put on a floured baking tray.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes


Carrot Cake
  • 8 oz or 225g caster sugar
  • › ½ cup vegetable oil
  • › 8oz or 225g grated carrots raw
  • › 2 eggs
  • › 9oz or 250g white
  • › self‑raising flour
  1. Pre‑heat the oven to 190°C or 375°F or Gas Mark 4.
  2. Mix sugar, grated carrots, eggs and oil
  3. together. Fold in flour and mix well.
  4. Turn into an 8” round tin lined with greaseproof
  5. paper, and bake in the pre‑heated oven.
  6. Check after 50 minutes, by which time the
  7. centre of the cake should have risen.
  8. Place on a wire tray to cool, with the greaseproof paper removed
